  • Awesome abode!

    6 July 2015

Church Square - located in the historic centre of Rye, is a grade II listed building that has been completely renovated with a contemporary extension added to the rear of the property.  The Client has taken time with the guidance of SWA to select contemporary and durable finishes while maintaining the traditions and proportions of the house.  The house has been designed to be automated with a lot to technology for the modern travelling Client and the finished result is sensational.

  • Spread the word.

    29 June 2015

Lovely words from Chris Osman, after the completion of Chris' property in Rye, East Sussex. Pictures to follow soon!

"Simon's thoroughly professional service helped enormously and made possible what was a difficult restoration/renovation project that involved creating a 21st century home from a 450 year old listed building. Simon's practice provided considered and innovative ideas, careful project management and, in the process, the all important reassurance and confidence clients need to deal with what can be, and usually is, a stressful undertaking! His advice and guidance was a major factor in achieving a successful result".

  • SWA to develop concepts for The Wabe!

    29 June 2015

The Wabe - A unique opportunity to develop concept proposals for one of the most iconic houses in North London.  SWA have been commissioned by a leading, high end London based Estate Agent who are selling the property to develop a series of drawings to demonstrate to a potential buyer what could be achieved with the property.

  • Stunning! Recently completed Court Lane.

    29 June 2015

The Clients brief was to create a contemporary extension and loft conversion with large amounts of natural light and a strong connection to the garden.  The client has a series of art pieces that were important to visit.  The extension angles at the rear to take full advantage of the site.  The result is a dramatic space that has totally transformed the way in which the Client uses the house and the enjoyment of it.

  • Elation…2 new project wins!

    26 June 2015

Simon Whitehead Architects are proud to announce 2 new project wins that are due to start in renowned Kensington, London.

The first, Flat 3 2 Queens Gate Terrace is large two story flat in a grade II listed grand classical terrace originally built between 1850-60. The property is located in one of London’s most prestigious neighbourhoods close to the Natural history Museum, Royal Albert Hall and Hyde Park. The SWA role is to completely refurbish the flat, bringing it up to date and to improve the quality of the design to both reflects the high standards of design expected in the location and that of the original building.

The second project at 50 Queens Gate Gardens is a large flat on the piano nobile of a large mid 19th century terrace built in a classical style. The terrace faces Queens Gate Gardens, a private garden square and is located in one of London’s most prestigious neighbourhoods close to the Museums and Hyde Park. We have been commissioned to completely refurbish the flat which is currently extremely dated but contains palatial rooms that hint at the flats former grandeur which we intend to resurrect.

Exciting times, keep checking back for progress on the above.

  • Pre-app advice positive for Geranium Shop

    22 September 2012

The extension to the Geranium Shop would add an additional storey. The flat roof design would extend up to the height of the adjoining terraced property and be of a lightweight appearance with large areas of glazing in the elevation treatment. Lambeth considered that overall the design would be in keeping with the character and appearance of the host property and the terrace as a whole.

  • The Boundary

    14 September 2012

  • Southwark planning guidance

    21 August 2012

Southwark continue to resist rear infill extensions (to outriggers of the L shaped Victorian home) with a boundary height higher than 2m. Their reasoning is that it creates a tunnelling effect to the next door property windows.

  • Work Complete on Extension in Clapham

    12 January 2011

In Clapham, South London the removal of a conservatory and replacement with a single storey extension allowed for the creation of much needed additional space for a kitchen and dining room on the ground floor. The extension was designed and detailed to respect the scale and character of the existing house with walls in yellow stock brickwork and lead detailing at the parapet and roof junctions.  The loft was also converted to provide an additional bedroom with ensuite bathroom.

2010

  • Penthouse in West End is Complete

    5 October 2010

The site was formerly a dilapidated shell on the roof of a building owned by a luxury clothing store in the heart of the West End of London. Working closely with the client we transformed the 3000 sqft space into a stunning minimalist penthouse apartment.

Our concept was to create a series of internal spaces united by a linear external terrace, drawing on the notion of inside-outside space. The sliding doors installed along the length of the facade can be fully opened to unite the interior and exterior spaces. Floor to ceiling glazing coupled with a white resin floor and white finishes maximise the fantastic natural light that the space benefits from.

The living space is partially divided by a partition with a built-in fish tank and the central space has a retractable roof light which can be fully opened on warm days. In addition to privacy screening, the external terrace that runs the length of the apartment also has a bespoke water fountain and has panoramic views over London.

2009

  • 36 Flats in Pimlico

    15 December 2009

We have recently completed this major development at a site on Winchester Street in Pimlico. The existing properties housed a number of dated flats and bedsits that represented a poor rental yeald for the area. Combining our vision and expertise with that of the client, we completely re-modernised and intelligently reconfigured the interiors creating 36 flats including 4 new affordable units.

We also extended one of the townhouses at the rear to increase floor space and bring an improved sense of rhythm and harmony to the rear elevation as a whole.

  • Wasabi Waterloo Opens for Business

    12 September 2009

The fourth in a series of resturant fit-outs for the sushi and bento bar chain Wasabi, this unit occupies a prime site on the concourse at London's Waterloo rail station. Wasabi's visual styling is clear throughout: clean lines are accentuated by the use of transparent and green-tinted materials and stainless steel which evoke an effortless simplicity.

The main floor of the shop is spacious with easy access to the display units and the cashier desks. A mezzanine provides an overflow of seating, as an extension of the same facility provided at ground floor.

  • All Systems Go in Pimlico

    27 April 2009

Pimlico Flats - Our client is doing a full transformation of this property to create affordable studio, one- and two-bedroom flats in the heart of Pimlico. The scaffolding is up and work has commenced on site. We’re hoping that the current tenants will continue to be as patient as they have to date for the remainder of the project. Now that the scaffolding is up and work has begun, we’ll be visiting the site regularly to bring you up to date progress reports. Expected Completion Date: End September 2009.
